The PSAX View

How to identify the PSAX views

From the PLAX view, as the name suggests, you are slicing through the long axis of the heart. By twisting the probe 90 degrees, you are now cutting the heart into circular slices.

Confusingly, the base of the heart is at the top, and the apex is at the bottom. Therefore, sliding your probe up the patient’s chest (towards the patient’s head), you are cutting through the base of the heart. Moving down, you are cutting closer to the apex of the heart.
